It’s a new month, and I thought I should finally write about my birthday. I love that so far, I’ve been lucky enough to spend every one of my birthdays with my family and friends, with good food and an even better cake. This past one was no different.
This year’s cake was, like last year, from Cadeaux Bakery, a small bakery on what I consider the outskirts of Gastown, a part of Vancouver home to some of its best restaurants – Ask for Luigi, for example. Cadeaux lives right up to that reputation. This year’s cake was very much your basic birthday cake – chocolate with vanilla frosting – but it was basic done very, very well: pretty piping and five alternating layers of dark, dark chocolate cake and vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream.
On top of great memories and a pretty cake, I received one of the best presents ever: a “foodie” tour of Vancouver. I got to be a tourist in my own city and enjoy some of the best of Vancouver gastronomy, starting with dim sum at Kirin and finishing off with Bella Gelateria chocolate sorbetto, with the Italian Kitchen’s meatballs and burratta in between. And Market’s steelhead sashimi was as amazing as the first time I ever tried it. It was a wonderful, wonderful day.
