It’s no secret that I love waffles; I’ve said this before: they are my breakfast/brunch food of choice.
Not long ago, we went to Nero Belgian Waffle Bar in the West End, and it’s become my new favourite place for Brussels waffles. I had the “Bresilienne”: a Brussels waffle (or liege, if you’d prefer) topped with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, a surprisingly mild caramel sauce, and a hazelnut crunch. Sounds decadent, but it was actually quite a delicate combination of toppings. The best part was the Brussels waffle itself: crisp on the outside, light and airy on the inside, and not sweet at all. Oftentimes places will go all out on their toppings in an effort to hide a waffle that isn’t great, but at Nero, the waffles are always at the forefront.
Nero Belgian Waffle Bar is a tiny, unassuming place, and if you’re not paying attention, you may very well miss it. It’s likely you’ll have to wait a bit for a table, but don’t be put off by that – you won’t be sorry.
