A pretty little bakery with clean white décor and an open kitchen, preparing lemon meringue tartlets, croissants, and five-layer cakes is the last thing you’d expect to find in a neighborhood with street names like Blood Alley and Gaelor’s Mews, yet Gastown is exactly where Cadeaux Bakery decided to lay down its roots. My mom has been a fan of this place since it opened, but I had only recently tried its offerings…and I have to say it was pretty much love at first sight (or taste, I guess). Their almond ricotta tart is a particular favourite, as are the lemon meringue tartlets and carrot cake.
For my twenty-fifth, we decided to try their dark chocolate praline cake: five layers of decadent dark chocolate cake, separated by alternating layers of chocolate and praline mousse with roasted hazelnuts, topped off with double chocolate fudge frosting. It was the perfect cake for that milestone, quarter-century mark!
