There are not many crisp, sunny days in a Vancouver winter, which is fine by me because I was born loving the rain, but the last couple days have been a really nice change from the usual – little gems of sunshine, if you will. Typically, I pull on a pair of Hunters, zip a windbreaker up to my chin, grip my quickly-cooling tea like it’s a lifeline, and keep a close eye on Stella as she runs around the dog park, splashes into icy water, or together, make our way through some usually muddy trail on the North Shore. You can see why sunny, albeit cold weekends, are sometimes a nice change for us.
So this morning, we walked to Sunset Beach, Stella making some friends along the way, and spent the better part of an hour dipping her toes in the water. That is, until she was distracted by a dead crab, at which point I had to pick her up and carry her up the stairs and away from it. Who knows what she would have done with it.
Afterward, we went to Beaucoup Bakery & Café to pick up some chocolate chip cookies and kouign amann. The chocolate chip cookies, which I wrote about in a recent post, are quite frankly, the best I’ve had. But I also had to get my hands on a few kouign amann, which tend to sell out quickly. Beaucoup’s kouign amann, though a little crunchier than I’m used to, are all sorts of amazing. Buttery, perfectly caramelized, and the best part, a light sprinkling of Maldon sea salt. I ate 3 on the way home.
